Why Architecture Week Matters — And What MOA Is Doing About It

By Michael Allen, CEO and Architect, MOA Architecture, Inc.

Every year, the built environment shapes the lives of millions of people — the schools where children learn, the community centers where neighbors gather, the civic spaces that say to every person who walks through the door: you belong here.

Most people never think about who designed those spaces. That's not a criticism. It's just the nature of good architecture — when it works, it disappears into the background of daily life.

But for the next generation of designers, engineers, planners, and community builders, someone has to pull back the curtain. Someone has to show them that the spaces they move through every day didn't appear by accident — that real people made decisions about them, and that those people had to learn their craft somewhere.

That's what Architecture Week is about. And it's what MOA Architecture has been committed to for years.

Architecture Week 2026 Theme: K-12 Engagement

We were thrilled to see the American Institute of Architects select the theme of K-12 engagement for Architecture Week this year. Because we believe that the profession of architecture cannot thrive if it isn't actively building a pipeline — and that pipeline has to start young.

We've produced webinar resources for students at three different stages of their journey, and we're making all of them available for this Architecture Week, free of charge.

For Students Ages 9–12: You're Already Thinking Like an Architect

If you've ever looked at a building and wondered why it was built that way — why the windows are where they are, why some spaces feel big and open while others feel small and cozy — you're already doing architecture.

Our youngest learners often have the most creative instincts. This webinar introduces kids ages 9–12 to the basics of design thinking: how architects ask questions before they ever pick up a pencil, how they listen to the people who will use a space, and how a single building can make someone feel welcomed or left out. We use simple activities and real examples to show kids that architecture is, at its core, about people.

For High School Students: This Could Be Your Path

High school is when students start making decisions that shape the rest of their lives — and many of them don't know that architecture is even an option, let alone what the path looks like.

I remember being in that position. I remember the moment someone showed me that designing buildings was a profession, a calling, a way to leave something lasting in the world. I want every high schooler who has ever drawn designs in the margins of their notebook to know: there is a road here, and people want to help you walk it.

This webinar covers what architecture school actually looks like, what skills matter, and what it means to build a career in a field where your work shapes communities for generations. It's honest, practical, and designed for students who are curious but haven't yet committed.

For College Students: What the Profession Is Looking For

If you're already in architecture school — or in a related design or engineering program — this one is for you.

The jump from studio to professional practice is real, and it can feel disorienting. What matters in a portfolio? What does a small firm like MOA actually look for when we work with emerging talent? What does it mean to design with equity and community in mind, not just aesthetics?

This webinar pulls back the curtain on professional practice. I speak candidly about what it took to build MOA Architecture, about the clients and communities we serve, and about what I believe the next generation of architects needs to carry forward — especially those coming from backgrounds that have historically been underrepresented in this field.

Architecture Shapes Communities. We Take That Seriously.

At MOA, we don't just talk about community impact — we design for it. Our portfolio includes work with HBCUs, civic institutions, and organizations that serve people who have often been overlooked by the design profession. Every project begins with listening. Every design decision is shaped by the people who will actually use the space.

That commitment extends to how we engage with our clients and how we engage the next generation. When we show a 10-year-old what an architect does, we're not just recruiting for the profession. We're showing them that the world they live in was designed — and that they could be the ones who design it next.
