Camp Harry Daniels Advancing to Construction

Reeves Young Selected as General Contractor

Camp Harry E. Daniels is advancing from planning and design into the construction phase, marking a significant milestone in the transformation of this historic South Carolina site.

Operated by South Carolina State University 1890 Extension, Camp Harry Daniels has long served as a place for youth development, education, and community gathering. Originally active as a summer camp in the mid-20th century, the site holds deep cultural and historical significance within the region. Today, the redevelopment effort is focused on preserving that legacy while creating a modern, resilient environment that will serve future generations.

MOA Architecture led the master planning and design process for the multi-phase, 260+ acre campus, working closely with university leadership and stakeholders to reimagine how the camp can support outdoor learning, recreation, and community engagement. Through a collaborative planning approach, the design establishes a framework for long-term growth while enhancing the natural character of the site.

The redevelopment includes a comprehensive program of new and improved facilities, including an Animal Demonstration Barn, Dining Hall, and Camper Cabins, along with expanded infrastructure, nature trails, athletic fields, staff housing, a marina, and a limnology center. Each element has been thoughtfully designed to support educational programming, promote environmental stewardship, and create meaningful connections to the outdoors.

Construction is being led by Reeves Young, whose work will bring the vision established during the master planning process into reality. The transition into construction represents the next chapter in a project defined by strong collaboration among the design team, client, and project partners.

“Camp Harry Daniels represents a unique opportunity to honor the history of a place while thoughtfully shaping its future,” said Michael Allen. “Through the master planning and design process, we’ve worked closely with South Carolina State University 1890 Extension to create a framework that supports learning, community, and connection to the natural environment. We’re excited to see that vision move into construction.”

As construction progresses, the Camp Harry Daniels redevelopment will continue to reflect a shared commitment to quality design, sustainability, and community impact—ensuring that the camp remains a meaningful destination for generations to come.
